Many people visited after the chicken parade on Saturday morning. Our live mascot, Foreman, entertained children at close range.

On Sunday Maynard Axelson showed slides and video detailing Brant and Snow Goose banding with USGS in Alaska last summer.

Gary Hanson of Sterling Heights, MI will be our presenter.

 
Gary is a true water-fowler who's spent his life hunting Lake Saint Clair and the Flats. He has been hand carving decoys for over 30 years, begining his carving career in 1970. He's as prolific in the world of gunning decoys as one can be with dozens of best of show wins to his name. A few of them at our own Puget Sound Open including winning the state Ducks Unlimited decoy contest for the past two years.

During this seminar, Gary will be painting a mallard drake and will be demonstrating his unique scrub-painting style that has made his decoys so attractive to judges, collectors, and especially other ducks.

 

This seminar will be held on Friday, May 10th from 5pm-9pm at Holiday Sports in Burlington, which is also the site of the 2013 Puget Sound Open.

Ben Welton visited with listeners about his many years of using this type of decoy as a guide on Puget Sound.

Kurt Benson and Doug Muldowney also displayed some of their methods that have made them so prolific at creating working decoys.

All three were involved in mentoring young carvers last spring in their quest to prepare entries for the Puget Sound Open decoy competition.This is an annual event sponsored by Washington Brant Foundation featuring several classes of competition for working decoys, usually drawing entries not only local but from across the U.S. Next year’s Open is planned for May 11th, check here for developing details, or phone Kurt Benson for info at 425-231-6497

]]>Congratulations to 2012 WBF Scholarship Winner - Dakota Johnsonhttp://www.wabrant.org/news/2012/10/6/congratulations-to-2012-wbf-scholarship-winner-dakota-johnso.htmlWashington Brant Foundation2012-10-06T15:53:33Z2012-10-06T15:53:33ZWe are proud to present our 2012 scholarship award of $1,000 to Dakota Johnson. He is attending Feather River College in his home town, Quincy, CA.  After completing general ed. units, he plans on tranferring to the University of Idaho or the University of Montana-Western to obtain a degree in Wildlife management, with an emphasis on waterfowl management.  Upon obtaining a B.S. degree, he wants to work as a wildlife conservation officer or waterfowl biologist in either Montana, Idaho, or the Dakotas.  The inspiration for this is to follow in the footsteps of his Great-Grandfather who was game warden for the state of California. This picture shows him working on a senior project at mentor, Michael Nesbit's, carving shop. Dakota completed and then donated the Ruddy decoy to the Quincy Youth Shooting Sports Association to raise money for their youth trap shooting program.
