2012 Puget Sound Competition Results

Here are the results from our show yesterday. Our show continues to grow year after year. We had even more entries than we had last year. Thanks to everyone who joined us or sent us an entry. We had a great time at The Farmhouse in Mount Vernon. There were some very impressive birds competing yesterday. We'll post pictures as soon as we have them available.

Judging, vendors, displays, silent auction from 10 am until 12 noon. The results announcements and live auction will start at 12:30. Walk-in decoy entries must be registered by 9:00am and will stay on display until 2:00pm. You are encouraged to mail-in your entries so you don't have be there so early for the check in.

We've added some great prizes for this year's sponsor membership contribution. Your $100 sponsorship will enter you into a raffle for one of three different guns:

Charles Daly 12 ga
A 20 ga youth model
.22 calibur Browning BAR

Also, a $25 membership will enter you into a drawing for a Winchester model 887

The Date of the 2012 Puget Sound Open has changed. The location will be the same, but the even will now be held on May 19th, 2012.

Foreman and Echo visit Blaine Elementary School

WBF continued its education program with a presentation at Blaine Elementary to approximately 160 4th graders. In addition to the well known brant Foreman, we introduced Echo the wood duck in his first appearance. He really stole the show, strolling among the students during Maynard’s talk about waterfowl characteristics and their habitat needs. At one point Echo caused quite a stir by perching on the lap of a very surprised listener. We finished with close encounters that produced some special moments.

Snow Geese & Other Wildlife of the Wrangle Island Nature Reserve

Join Russian biologist, Vasiliy Baranyuk, for one of his three presentations this month. Vasily is an accomplished photographer with three decades of images of the islands wildlife.

Hear talks about his experiences observing and studying wildlife in some of the most unique places on earth, and view some of his stunning photography. Arrive early to talk to Vasiliy review his photography.

There are three different presentations:

Wednesday, March 21st at Holiday Sports in Burlington at 7:00 pm
Saturday, March 24th at the Rexville Grocery in LaConner at 6:00 pm
Monday, March 26th at the Burlington Public Library at 7:00 pm

Snowy Owls at Boundary Bay

Snowy owls have created quite a stir in the birding world this winter with a migration of record numbers in many places. These were photographed at Boundary Bay, B.C. just over the border where more than a hundred were reported in December. The last time Snowys came to WA in any number was 2008. Never before have so many been seen in mid-west states such as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Others reported in Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Illinois, and even one made it to Hawaii. Most experts believe after two good lemming years in the Arctic boosted production, a food shortage combined with deeper snow sent them farther south this winter.

We've added a special new contest this year called the Muskrat Division and we are also hosting the 2012 Washington State Ducks Unlimited decoy contest.
